Field: Literature

Topic: Gender Theory/Feminism and Kate Chopin

Subtopic: A study of the female characters (mainly protagonists) of Chopin's works.

Limiter: Text - 'The Awakening' and select short stories

Limiter: Gender Roles specifically, and in relation to feminism and sexuality

Limiter: Ways in which the female protagonist defies society's constraints

Problem:

What are the key functions of the female characters which defy the boundaries set by the societies set around them, and how do these actions address the issue of feminism in Chopin's time?

By reversing gender roles in the characters she created to show the flaws of the patriarchal belief system, what message does Chopin convey and how?

By creating a strong female character, does Chopin promote the acceptance of gender equality, or does she inadvertently support the chauvinistic ideology by showing what havoc or moral disgrace a strong woman could create?

To what extent does Chopin embrace and condone the sexuality of her female protagonists, and reject the stereotyped confines of the societies which surround those characters?
